When a familiar pattern starts to feel like a plan.
Historical patterns can inform a decision. They cannot replace the conditions, evidence and risk limits that make it defensible.

A familiar pattern can create confidence surprisingly quickly.
The pattern may repeat.
But repetition is not certainty.
A pattern tells you what has happened before. It does not tell you whether the conditions supporting your decision still exist.
What must still be true
A pattern becomes useful only when you identify the conditions that would allow it to repeat. Those conditions will vary, but four categories remain relevant across market cycles:
- ContextEconomic conditions must support the thesis rather than quietly weaken it.
- CapitalFinancing conditions and required returns affect what investors can reasonably pay.
- FundamentalsCash flows, earnings and balance sheets determine how much pressure can be absorbed.
- ConfirmationBroader participation and independent evidence make a market story more durable.
These factors matter more than the comfort offered by the pattern.
When a possibility begins to feel like a plan
A reassuring forecast can offer relief. Relief can quietly increase confidence. Before long, a possibility begins to feel like the plan itself, even though the underlying conditions have not changed.
This is where margin of safety becomes personal. Klarman has described it as having “room to be wrong.” The question is not only whether your forecast could be right. It is whether your decision can withstand being early, incomplete or wrong.
Test the pattern before it becomes a plan.
- 01
What must remain true for this thesis to hold?
- 02
What happens if the supporting conditions do not improve?
- 03
How much risk am I carrying while I wait?
- 04
What evidence would make me revise my view?
Those answers will not tell you exactly what happens next. They will help you make a decision you can live with while the outcome is still uncertain.
A market pattern can inform your decision. It should not make the decision for you.
