Why does this investment belong in my portfolio?
An investment can look attractive on its own and still be a poor fit for my portfolio.

“Know what you own and know why you own it.”
Peter Lynch’s advice sounds simple.
But explaining why an investment belongs in my portfolio takes more than saying I expect its price to rise.
I need to understand what it contributes to my goals and how it changes the risks I already carry.
Five questions help me examine that.
Give the investment a clear purpose.
- 01
What goal does it serve?
- 02
What role will it play?
- 03
Why this investment?
- 04
What does it change in my portfolio?

Can I carry the exposure?
1. What goal does it serve?
I want to connect the investment to something my money needs to accomplish.
That might be funding a future expense, generating income or preserving purchasing power.
2. What role will it play?
Different investments can serve the same goal in different ways.
I need to explain whether I expect this one to provide growth, income, liquidity or diversification of underlying risks.
3. Why this investment?
A persuasive story needs evidence.
I want to understand what supports its value, what could weaken that support and how much optimism the current price already reflects.
4. What does it change in my portfolio?
Adding another holding may increase my exposure to conditions I already depend on.
Gold and silver, for example, have different fundamentals but share some drivers. I need to examine the combined exposure.
5. Can I carry the exposure?
The position size, currency, liquidity and time horizon need to fit my circumstances.
Could I need the money before the investment has time to work?
What would being wrong mean for my financial commitments?
An investment can look attractive on its own and still be a poor fit for my portfolio.
These questions give me a reason for owning it that I can explain, test and revisit.
